About the Artist

My name is Dale Dempsey and I was born in Carlisle, Cumbria in 1958. When I was 8 years old we moved to the lovely town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. In 1976 I started my working life with Tilcon, working with iron oxide pigments for their coloured hot lime mortars at their laboratories close by at Lingerfield. It was my job to match their range of colours to the bricks made by the all the brick manufacturers within the UK.
In the 1980's, soon after getting married, I started a brick tinting company which eventually evolved into the global brand 'Dyebrick'.

I always enjoyed art when I was at school and was influenced by my art teacher who taught us a lot about Modern Art, particularly Cubism. Little did I know that a few years later I would create my own movement, which I like to describe as Oblongism!
I have been applying a wide variety of artistic techniques on many different brick and masonry surfaces. I use earth-based iron oxide pigments and mix them with water-based pure mineral fixatives. The products are non-toxic and do not alter the physical properties of the brick.

I am lucky to work on some of the oldest and finest properties in the country and I have recently started to apply my products to a new canvas type...PAPER!

...and other material too!

Although my twin sister Diana was not too happy!
